Hi Gorguous!

With so many popular black hair styles in the world like braided, locks, sleek and straight, curly, short and funky, twisted and more sophisticated hair styles. Whichever hairstyle you like, you must give great care to your facial features and bone structure. Why? Like everything else in this crazy world, one-size does not fit all. Different African American hairstyles can enhance your look, while the same style on another person will take away from their features.

So when attempting a new style, it's wise to take your physical features into account. For example, a close cropped black hair style may not suit a person with a larger body with a round face (I know this personally).

Like a beautiful choral rendition, make sure your hair style and physique compliment each other!

So what's the most important thing to consider? The shape of your beautiful face! I'm sure you know by now that certain styles change the shape of your face, which in turn changes the symmetry of your body. Sometimes it can work, but some times it doesn't.

What is your facial shape?

  • oval

  • round

  • square

  • heart

  • rectangular

Whichever facial shape you possess, the consensus is to try and make your shape appear more oval. Why? The professionals say it makes your face more evenly balanced. It creates an optical illusion that your facial features are more evenly balanced. Such as the distance between your eyes, nose, and chin. Of course makeup can play a big part here as well.

Here are some tips to blend your hair for a more oval facial look.

  • Round - Add some height to your bangs. This minimizes your cheekbones

  • Square - Look for a style with short edges and texture directed towards the face.

  • Rectangular - More height and fullness can be very affective.

The best tip I can give you is to go to your favorite salon and try on some different wigs. Bring your cosmetics with you and see it beforehand. Otherwise you may be disappointed, waste all that time and money, and end up undoing what the stylist had done. Look through magazines for people who have similar facial features and body structures. Remember, you can always use makeup and accessories to balance things out.

Best of luck,

Deb

PS. No matter what style you choose, you are beautiful from the inside.
